Maeve Morris, doomed to spend her summer holidays in Kildioma, 'a snoring-boring little town - a god-forsaken pit', with a bunch of health-food freaks in the guise of relatives and a cousin whose only interests are twittering birds and reading books crammed with hundreds of *useful facts*, feels brain-deadness coming on.
