Aosdána was founded in 1981 to honour artists whose work has made an invaluable contribution to the arts in Ireland and to assist members in devoting their energies full time to their artistic practice. The succeeding pages tell the History of Aosdána and how it was founded. With members across the disciplines of literature, visual art, music, architecture and choreography, Aosdána's existence is to be celebrated as a very special way of honouring artists in Ireland.
